A Brief History of Puppets

The art of making and manipulating puppets is called puppetry. Most historians agree that puppets originated in India where the Hindus believed puppets had lived with the gods before coming down to earth. Puppets were also popular in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and soon spread to all of western Europe, Asia and Africa. The designs and styles of these ancient puppets reflected their history, religion, mythology and culture. A Pilgrim puppet was brought to the New World on the Mayflower, but puppets were not new to the native Americans who had used them in religious ceremonies for generations. Many famous authors and composers, including Goethe, Shakespeare, G.B. Shaw, Haydn and Stravinsky have written works especially for puppets.
